FAQ:

Offline mode & internet connection

StickSafe runs completely offline – without cloud requirements and without an internet connection.

No. StickSafe works completely offline. Your data remains locally on your own storage medium – no cloud requirement and no online account.

Clear responsibilities: You define who knows the master password, who keeps the PUK and when emergency access is permitted. This ensures that access remains controlled and traceable.

No. StickSafe does not automatically synchronise with cloud services and does not send content to external servers. You retain full control over where your data is stored.

Yes. StickSafe is particularly suitable for environments where offline operation, control and minimal attack surface are important. It does not require a permanent connection or cloud login.

Offline reduces typical online risks (e.g. phishing, cloud leaks, account takeovers), but does not replace sound fundamentals: strong master password, high-quality storage medium, secure storage and clear emergency rules (PUK).

USB storage device

You install StickSafe on your own storage medium – stick, SSD/HDD or (micro)SD.

You decide: USB stick, external SSD/HDD or (micro)SD adapter. The important thing is to have a reliable, high-quality medium – we do not sell hardware.

For noticeably better speed – especially with lots of files, scans, photos or larger archives. For pure passwords/documents, less is often technically sufficient, but USB 3.0 is the better basis.

For documents and passwords, 8–32 GB is usually sufficient. For lots of PDFs, scans and photos, 64–256 GB is advisable. For very large amounts of data or teams, SSD/HDD (256 GB–1 TB) is preferable to a small stick.

Yes. You can use the same medium on different devices (StickSafe will then be installed and usable there). The data remains on the storage medium – not in a cloud. (Windows systems only)

Without your master password (and PUK rule, if applicable), the contents cannot be read. Additional recommendations include secure storage, clear responsibilities and, depending on the risk, a controlled backup/second medium.

Emergency & PUK

With the PUK, you can create a clear emergency and substitution logic – traceable and controlled.

The PUK is your unlock code for emergencies. It is required if StickSafe has been locked after several incorrect entries of the master password.

If the master password is entered incorrectly 5 times, StickSafe automatically locks access and opens a “README file” where information about the PUK holder can be stored. This consistently intercepts incorrect attempts and makes unauthorised access more difficult.

You decide. Typically, this would be a solicitor, lawyer, trustee, tax advisor or a designated confidant – depending on what suits your situation.

Clear emergency logic: you keep the master password, while the PUK is stored separately. This allows you to set up a dual control principle or a clear substitution process.

Define responsibilities in writing (who keeps the PUK, when can it be used) and keep the information up to date. This way, in an emergency, it is immediately clear who is authorised to act – without disclosing unnecessary data.

Teams & Organisations

StickSafe helps you clearly regulate access, responsibilities and handovers within your team – without cloud dependency and without chaos.

Yes. StickSafe is suitable for teams and organisations when access and responsibilities need to be clearly regulated – e.g. via roles, processes and defined emergency logic.

Clear responsibilities: You define who knows the master password, who keeps the PUK and when emergency access is permitted. This ensures that access remains controlled and traceable.

With a defined handover process: document responsibilities, keep content up to date and store emergency access (PUK) separately. This makes the handover plannable rather than improvised.

Sensitive access is designed in such a way that no single person has sole control. Example: One person keeps the PUK, another knows the master password – access is only granted in accordance with a defined procedure.

Yes. Offline operation, minimal attack surface and clearly defined processes support availability and control requirements – especially where cloud solutions are undesirable or prohibited.

General

Here you will find the most important answers regarding installation, security, languages and the daily use of StickSafe.

StickSafe is an offline, encrypted data safe that you can run on your own storage device – for documents, access data and sensitive information.

Yes. Without authorisation (master password and, if applicable, emergency logic), the contents cannot be read. We also recommend: high-quality media, secure storage and clear responsibilities.

The website and software are available in 8 languages. This means you can also use StickSafe in international teams or for relatives abroad.

No. StickSafe is not a cloud subscription product. You retain control over your data and storage media – without any ongoing server dependency.

Ideally, this should be done at regular intervals: check, add to, remove outdated information. In organisations, it is also advisable to assign clear responsibility (“owner”) and define a handover process.
